For the thirtieth time, to celebrate the Independence Day, the General Elżbieta Zawacka Foundation (FGEZ) organizes a scientific conference. 2020 is a special year because of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Foundation of the "Pomeranian Archives of the Home Army" upon the initiative of General Elżbieta Zawacka. After the death of General Zawacka, the Foundation Council gave it the name "General Elżbieta Zawacka Foundation". The Foundation Council decided to celebrate this anniversary with the 2nd Congress of Historians of Independence Underground, co-organized with the Institute of History and Archival Sciences at the Faculty of Historical Sciences of Nicolaus Copernicus University, the Faculty of Historical Sciences of Nicolaus Copernicus University and the Institute of National Remembrance. The Foundation Council unanimously decided that the theme of the Congress should be: "Courage and responsibility: independence underground in Europe in the years 1939–1945. Organization, people, forms and methods of struggle”.
The Congress shall take place on 26-27 November 2020 in Toruń (Collegium Humanisticum UMK – Nicolaus Copernicus University, ul. Bojarskiego 1) and will consist of several parallel parts: a scientific conference, historical workshops, and thematic exhibitions. The whole event will be celebrated with a concert and a gala dinner on 26 November 2020.
The Congress will consist of lectures, workshop parts and presentations of historical exhibitions. The topics of the papers should fall within the broad theme of the Congress ("Courage and responsibility: independence underground in Europe in the years 1939–1945. Organization, people, forms and methods of struggle"), with particular regard to the following issues:
1) Resistance movement or independence underground? Different definitions and ranges of resistance in occupied Europe;
2) Occupation system or systems in conquered Europe;
3) Comparative studies of resistance movements in occupied Europe;
4) Guerilla in occupied Europe;
5) Uprisings in Europe;
6) Polish Underground State - politics, administration, army;
7) Disputes over the balance of resistance;
8) Politics, ideas and struggle;
9) Forms and methods of resistance;
10) Social attitudes towards the underground activities;
11) Biographies.
The time to deliver a paper should not exceed 30 minutes, the communication - 20 minutes, while workshop classes should not last longer than 60 minutes.
Please attach the abstract of the paper /communication or information about the workshop (1000 characters with spaces) and one-sentence information about yourself (+ photo in .jpg format) to the registration application (we will prepare conference materials in the form of a folder for Congress guests).
Speakers will be honoured; we also offer accommodation (for a nominal fee) and meals. We also ensure the publication of texts sent and qualified for printing by the Editorial Committee of the Foundation Library as part of the prepared post-conference materials (including reviewing procedures). CONGRESS GUESTS:
To the 2nd Congress of Historians of Independence Underground we invite everyone interested in the history of independence struggle in Europe in 1939-1945: historians, museum workers, educators, teachers, pupils and students. At the Congress, everyone will be able to find something interesting for them both in scientific and educational terms. A detailed program will be published in September 2020. However, it is worth registering as a guest by reserving accommodation if you need one.
For guests using accommodation (Hotel Mercury, ul. Krasińskiego 1), the organizer charges a conference fee of 40 PLN / person regardless of the number of nights (from 1 to 3 nights).
